Light Rail News

http://hamptonroads.com/2013/04/locals-question-proposal-put-tide-virginia-beach

Sorry, but there are no corrections needed on my part.

Your part however is another matter.
- Trains haven't gone choo-choo in more than 60 years.
- I didn't report numbers for HRT; I reported national averages.
- The national averages however for hourly costs are $124.50 & $248.4. Still changes nothing, since the point is what does it cost per passenger mile; not per hour.
- Out in Portland, OR where they move essentially the same number of passenger miles by bus as they move by LRT, their hourly costs are $136.19 bus & $175.18 LRT.
- During the 16 years from 1996-2011 to do the same job in terms of how far people are moved, total spending for rail including capital & operating was $2.905B. Total spending for buses, $3.111B.
- Conclusion, light rail is cheaper long term!

Hampton Roads has nothing like what you describe.

But it does exist around the country in some cities. It is called Bus Rapid Transit or BRT for short. And despite those hourly figures you like to toss around, it is still more expensive than LRT. Again, the point of public transit is to move people from point A to point B. This is measured in passenger miles, 1 person moved 1 mile = 1 passenger mile.
According to the National Transit Database report for 2011 the average of all transit agencies in the US using BRT was 90 cents per passenger mile.
That is 30 cents higher than the average for LRT, which comes in at 60 cents per passenger mile.
Don't get me wrong, buses have a role in the transportation mix; but unless you actually like higher taxes, you should be supporting light rail.
